L. D. Sibley Stereoscope
United States, New York, 1870s
We love the swing-open design of this album stereoscope. Patented in 1875 in the United States by L. D. Sibley, it’s designed to view a replaceable stack of stereoviews in a double-sided wire album. The lens assembly acts as a handle when it’s closed but then swings up and out in either direction to view the cards on both sides of the album. The card clips in the wire album adjust to hold standard-size card stereoviews or the larger ones. The album in this one still has one of the red protective covers stamped by the manufacturer R. Fiene, 52 Grove St, New York.
