José Francisco Corrêa & Cia Cigarros Veado Tin Stereoscope
Brazil, 1900s
One of the unique aspects of this NPG viewer is that it comes with color stereoviews. The Veado or “deer” brand of cigarettes was a true rags to riches story of José Francisco Corrêa who traveled to Brazil from Portugal as a young kid. He came from a poor background but in Brazil he ended up starting a cigarette empire. He started by making his own cigarettes with his small “Veado” company around age 18 and over the years it grew to where he oversaw the large-scale manufacturing of tobacco and cigarettes, eventually referred to as “rei do fumos” — the king of smoke. He became a great philanthropist and, as a result, was given the title of “Count” back in Portugal.
